Dear Parents and Caregivers,

2020 was a year like no other! Who could have predicted the astonishing rate at which life as we knew it was about to change? As always South Lake Primary School (SLPS) staff went over and above to minimise disruption to teaching and learning, and maintain some semblance of school life for students. During all of the upheaval, the support we received from parents and the wider community was outstanding! Commendation came from Director General Lisa Rodgers who congratulated the Education sector for their critical function in reducing the spread of COVID 19, ensuring continuity of teaching and learning, and being pivotal in getting the state on the road to recovery. Amid 2020 COVID, all classrooms at SLPS had a ‘makeover’, as part of a $483,709 high priority maintenance work program. This included new carpets, window treatments, painting, pinup boards in our classrooms and improvements to surrounding buildings. Fresh, bright rooms for the future! Additionally, our brand new fully equipped science laboratory was completed. 2020 also saw continued improvements to SLPS’s technology infrastructure, and the relocation of School of Special Education Needs: Behaviour and Engagement (SSEN: BE) staff to SLPS, located in C Block.

After a hiccup in February, the 2021 school year finally got underway. Like all of you, this was not the start to the 2021 school year that I was expecting, and I suspect that until such time that the world gets a handle on COVID, lockdowns will be a part of life.  Welcome to all our new students, especially all our Kindy and Pre-primary students who are commencing their education journeys.Starting Kindergarten is a very important and exciting time in your child’s life and in your lives as well. On behalf of the staff and myself, we want you to know that we will do everything we can to make your child’s kindergarten start and kindergarten year, the best possible.

A huge amount of work was done by staff in 2020 and has provided us with excellent direction for 2021 and successive years; it’s all systems go. In 2021, we are operating 11 full-time classes and students will receive instruction in English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) as well as instruction from full-time specialists in Physical Education, Art, Digital Design and Technology, Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Italian, and Music. Additionally, students can participate in School of Instrumental Music (SIM) classes, join the Sustainability Club, the STEM Club, or the Rugby Club, or learn Latin in their free time. Tara Kelso, our School Psychologist, is onsite 2 days a week and our chaplain, Ms Eva Pipes, is on site 2 and a half days a week. Across the school K – 6 staff use Explicit Instruction, make quality teaching and learning adjustments for students at educational risk and our early childhood staff continue to embed the Walker Learning philosophy in classrooms. South Lake Primary School is a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) school and we aim to provide a positive learning environment where every student is respected, and their right to learn is encouraged and protected. Staff recognise that behaviour is learned and understand that they must help and teach students to learn more productive and responsible behaviour. Everything we do is evaluated in relation to the impact on student learning, their engagement at school and their enjoyment of the school experience.

At SLPS, we view parents as partners in the education of their children and seek opportunities to link with the home. Our School Council has successfully transitioned to a capable School Board and our P&C are active around the school; we acknowledge all of their input and fundraising efforts. As well as partnerships mentioned previously, connections with various government agencies, City of Cockburn Local Government Authority, Gutteridge Haskins & Davey (GHD) Engineering, Curtin University, Lakeland Senior High School and network schools, and Foodbank have been forged. If you haven’t been able to visit your child’s classroom please make a time to come to school and meet your child’s teacher, myself and other members of the administration team. We are always keen and happy to meet our parents.

Kind Regards,

Leigh Liley
